Take control of the group by saying something like, “We’re about to get started.” Here’s what you want them to understand:

- Get the chatter out right away by getting to know them and something fun about them.
- If you’re having trouble getting them to talk right away, ask a leading question such as, “What is your favorite appropriate YouTube video?”
- This allows the students to get used to talking. Entering into their chatter and listening shows them that you care. More times than not, allowing these few moments of open chatter creates an environment of trust within your small group before you ever get to the discussion.

- What’s discussed in this group stays in this group.
- If someone is talking, no one else should be talking.
